Inhoud minor This degree is situated at the interface of information, communication, production and navigation, and focuses on the skills and tools required for the successful combination of these areas. The curriculum for the undergraduate degree in Media Design is designed to enable students to structure, design and successfully implement complex design projects, to consider business and technical aspects and to combine skills, knowledge and methods with intuition, experience and creativity.

_ Analog and digital media technologies
_ Computer science for media design
_ Media theory, history of culture and design
_ Marketing, project management and business studies
_ Sociology, psychology of perception and communication
_ English and/or another foreign language

Vakken die ik ga volgen
Elective 1: Media Specialisation
This course provides short projects, lectures and seminars to ongoing aspects of media design. The content changes regularly. The students may select form courses in:
- Photography
- Print
- Interactive Media
The courses deal with aesthetics, technology, design practices and/or the field of application– the focus depending on the actual content of the running course. The competences in the selected medium are developed and enhanced with practice oriented exercises and short projects.
Design 3: Applied Media
Execution of a design project from brainstorming to publishing. The students may select from projects with different focuses:
- Photography
- Print
- Interactive Media
Concrete, real life oriented project definitions confront the students with tasks and processes required in a design project. Teams accomplish the work from first ideas to conception and realisation until postproduction and publishing. In discussion those projects are used as a basis for generalization of processes and solutions in the selected media.
Theory 4: Models of Best Practice in Design
Excursion will take the students to important stations of design and its practice like Zürich, the archive of the HDK Ulm, projects like »Werkraum Bregenzerwald«, etcetera. Samples of best practice projects will be kept up to date. The excursions will be complemented by reports of the students. Exchange students get to know the region. Museums, collections and events are possible excursion targets too, thereby it is possible to study essential intermedia layouts.
Media Technology: Media Distribution
Methods and tools to control complex media productions.
In particular:
- Media databases
- Asset management systems
- Content management systems and cognate systems (e.g. document management, knowledge management)
In depth research and report of special Areas in media technology:
- Data compression
- Streaming technologies
- Prepress and print finishing
- Systems and format for multi media
Media Informatics: Corporate Systems
- Fundamentals of database systems
- Query languages for data base systems (example: SQL)
- Server side programming (example: PHP)
- Structure, usage and systems within XML
- The XML family
- Modern LOB systems (example: MOSS2007, Domino, Adventure Works)
English 4: Creative Writing
Based on Joseph Campell's character-based narrative model "The Hero's Journey", students examine various genre films with the aim to extract the underlying narrative formula. In a second step, they use the model to develop characters and stories of their own.

The world of sings (extra vak):
The participants get insight of visual communication, semiology and methods of development and evaluation of signs and sign systems.
The participants create their own sign system.

Accommodatie Tussen 15 februari en 15 juli woon ik in de International Dormitory in Dornbirn, op loopafstand van de Universiteit. Deze dorm is in augustus opgeleverd en is dus nog helemaal nieuw! In de dorm wonen nog zo'n 20 andere studenten uit de rest van de wereld.



Over Dornbirn Vorarlberg is situated in the west of Austria and has a total population of about 350.000 people. With its 42.000 inhabitants, Dornbirn is the largest town of Vorarlberg. It is situated in the heart of the Upper Rhine Valley, only 10 km away from Lake Constance and Bregenz (the capital of Vorarlberg). The region around Lake Constance offers students a great variety in exploring the area in respect to economy, culture and leisure. Furthermore, cities such as Munich (Germany), Konstanz (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland), St. Gallen (Switzerland), Bregenz (capital of Vorarlberg), Feldkirch (second largest town in Vorarlberg) or Innsbruck (capital of the neighboring region of Tyrol) can easily be reached and visited within a day. The train journey to either Vienna or Paris takes about 8 hours. In winter the numerous skiing-regions and resorts with a total of 320 skiing lifts and slopes up to 2.500 meters invite both locals and tourists to explore the “white world”.
