WEEK 8

06.04.09 Programmeren in de zon / Programming in the sun
Vandaag wilde ik eigenlijk gaan snowboarden, maar daar was geen tijd voor in het schema. We wilden namelijk vanmiddag naar het treinstation gaan om te vragen wat een ticket naar Italie kost. Na ongeveer een uur voor de balie te hebben gestaan en alle mogelijkheden uitgelegd te hebben gekregen had ik echt geen tijd meer om nog langer daar te staan. Ik had afgesproken met een van de Oostenrijkse studentes uit ons programmeervak om haar te helpen met het CMS systeem waar we onze website in moeten bouwen voor dat vak. Dus gaf ik mijn geld voor het ticket aan Saara, zodat ALS ze een besluit hadden genomen, ze voor mij ook een ticket kon kopen. Ondertussen liep ik richting de universiteit. Eenmaal daar aangekomen was het heel gezellig :) Chips eten en tegelijk programmeren uitleggen is best te doen! Marko en ik waren er op zich ook nog best in geslaagd om haar de basis dingen uit te leggen. Na iets van 3 uur op school te hebben gezeten, ging ik naar m'n kamer toe. Daar hoorde ik dat we morgen om 7:30 de trein naar Bologna zouden nemen. OK! Tas inpakken dan maar =D
Today, I wanted to go snowboarding, but there was no time for that in the schedule. We wanted to go to the train station to check out how much a train ticket to Italy would cost. After hanging out at the ticket desk for about an hour, we still didn't make a decision and I had to go to the university. So I gave my money to Saara so in case they made a decision, she could buy my ticket as well :) In the mean time, I walked to the uni to meet up with Raphaela and Marko. Marko and I were supposed to explain to her how the CMS system works that we have to make a website with for the programming course. That was kind of fun, so we stayed at school for about 3 hours, eating crisps and explaining Drupal at the same time. When I got home in the evening, I heard that we were supposed to be on the train at 7:30 the next morning to Bologna. Alright, let's pack my bags then!

 

07.04.09 Laten we naar Italie gaan / Let's go to Italy
Vanochtend om 7 uur verzameld in de gezamenlijke keuken en richting het station gelopen. Ookal was het besluit om naar Italie te gaan nogal random en plotseling, we hadden er zin in! Dus hadden we de trein vanuit Dornbirn richting Innsbruck en daarna een directe trein richting Bologna. In de trein veel geslapen en vrienden gemaakt met Anne-Marie, een 63-jarige enigszins verwarde vrouw uit Italie, maar oorspronkelijk uit Oostenrijk. Veel gekletst met haar over Oostenrijk en Italie, haar hond, haar man, Maxima (blijkbaar is die ook beroemd en geliefd buiten Nederland), waar wij vandaan kwamen, etc. Heel gezellig! En ik was zo'n beetje de tolk naar de rest van de groep, aangezien ik de enige was die nog enigszins Duits spreekt :) Ging nog best prima ook eigenlijk! Daar kwamen we halverwege de middag aan! Na onze lange treinreis konden we wel wat eten gebruiken en natuurlijk is Bologna geen Bologna zonder een pasta Bolognese ;) Het was supermooi weer, dus we hebben veel rondgelopen in onze 3 uur in de stad, op het terras gezeten en de stad verkend. Leuke stad! Toen weer in de trein, dit keer naar Florence. Een vriendin van Laura woonde in Florence voor 1 semester, dus daar konden we logeren! Flor (Florence - Flor, toeval?) woonde in een mooi appartement met hoge plafonds net buiten het centrum van Florence. Nog wat gekletst, maar het was al vrij laat en iedereen was moe, dus rond een uurtje of 1 gingen we maar slapen!
This morning, we gathered in the kitchen at 7 a.m. and walked to the train station. Even though the decision to go to Italy was quite random and last-minute, we were very excited about it! We went on the train from Dornbirn to Innsbruck first and then switched trains to Bologna. The train was quite comfortable and we made a new friend in our train cabin: Anne-Marie, a 63-year-old woman originally from Austria, but now living in Italy. She was a bit confused (suddenly switching from German to Italian and expecting me to still understand what she was saying), but very nice and kind of cool. She told me (as a tolk for the rest of the group) all about her youth, her dog, her husband, how much she loves Maxima and our royal family and a lot more. When we got to Bologna, we were kind of hungry for the trip and what would be cooler than eating pasta Bolognese in Bologna? Right. So we ate some pasta at a terrace in the center :) It was such nice weather! We walked around a lot, did some exploring in the city and bought some food for in the train later today. We only had 3 hours in Bologna, but for as far as I know: Bologna is a cool city! Around 7 o'clock, we took the train to Florence. One of Laura's friends was studying in Florence for one semester, so we could stay at her place there. Flor (Flor - Florence, coincidence?) picked us up from the station and took us to her apartment. Really nice place! We talked for a bit, but we were all quite tired, so around 1 o'clock we all went to sleep.

 

08.04.09 Florence ontdekken / discovering Florence
Vanochtend hebben we een beetje uitgeslapen en gedoucht onder een op Italiaanse lengtes afgestemde douche (lees: met een beetje geluk schouder-hoogte =D). Rond 12 uur zijn we de stad in gegaan en heeft Flor ons langs alle toeristische plekken geleid. Supermooie stad! Toen hebben we even wat koffie gedronken in het zonnetje en hebben we over de markt gelopen, waar Saara een exacte kopie van haar zonnebril kocht. Heel logisch! Toen leidde Flor ons naar pizza-tentje waar alle 'locals' pizza aten. Ook waren we langs het bioscoop gebouw gelopen, wat in een soort oud theater zat. Mooi gebouw! Al met al hadden we echt heel ver gelopen vandaag en besloten we even pauze te houden op een pleintje voor het museum. Wat gekaart en drinken gehaald bij de supermarkt. Flor moest even naar een les toe, dus wachtten we op haar. Ondertussen deden wij wat boodschappen voor vanavond. Toen we "thuis" kwamen, ging ik pasta koken voor de hele groep. Ondanks het feit dat de groep graag zoveel mogelijk wilde besparen op eten en we eigenlijk alleen pasta, tomatensaus en een beetje courgette hadden, was de pasta nog best prima! Eigenlijk wilden we vanavond uitgaan, maar onze voeten vonden dat niet zo'n goed idee. Dus hebben we een uur geworsteld met een fles wijn die niet open wilde en hadden we chips en popcorn. Gezellig avondje :) Toen gingen we bedenken waar we morgen heen zouden gaan. Uiteindelijk kwamen we uit op Venetie en had ik een hostel geboekt net buiten Venetie.
This morning we slept a lot and had a shower (a real Italian shower, adjusted on the size of an average Italian person e.g. 1,5mtr haha). We went into the city center of Florence around 12:00. Flor, Laura's friend, guided us to all the famous tourist areas. What a beautiful city! After some walking, we went to a cafe for our morning coffee :) The weather was great, so we drunk our coffee outside in the sun. Then we walked across a market with all kinds of tourist stuff: T-Shirts, bags, caps, towels and key chains with I LOVE FIRENZE and all the other usual market products :) Saara bought an exact copy of her sunglasses, which was very amusing and totally logical. After I don't know how many miles of walking, we sat down at a square before a museum and played cards. We got some drinks and food at the supermarket nearby and enjoyed the sun for a bit more. Flor had to go to school for a couple of hours, so we decided to stay there until she was done at school. When we got 'home', I cooked some pasta. Even though we went for the low-budget ingredients and only had one vegetable, it actually tasted quite OK! We wanted to go out tonight, but our feet were so tired they forced us to stay at home and eat chips while drinking some cheap Italian wine. We had quite a struggle with the wine bottle! It didn't want to open, so after everyone tried to open it for about 40 minutes it finally gave in and we could drink it :) It tasts so much better if you have to work for it haha! Anyway, we had a great night :) Then we discussed where to go tomorrow and we ended up with the plan to go to Venice. I booked a hostel and we went to sleep for our last night in Florence.

 

 

09.04.09 Van Florence naar Venetie / From Florence to Venice
Vanochtend gingen we vroeg op pad, zodat we nog wat van onze laatste dag in Florence konden maken. Het was echt supermooi weer en eigenlijk te warm om veel te lopen, dus hebben we de halve dag op een trap bij het water -in de schaduw- doorgebracht met onze nieuwe wijn en een gezellig picknick gehouden. We hadden mooi uitzicht vanaf ons plekje, dus waarom zouden we verder lopen? Uiteindelijk nog wel wat plekken bezocht en wat eten gekocht voor in de trein naar Venetie. De trein was best OK en we kwamen rond een uur of 9 aan bij station Venezia Mestre. Vanaf daar was het ongeveer 20 minuten naar de camping, maar het duurde zo'n 1,5 uur voordat 'onze' bus er was. Eenmaal op de camping kwam Saara erachter dat ze die camping al een keer had bezocht met haar ouders een paar jaar geleden. Toeval =D Heerlijk gedoucht in de publieke doucheruimte (geen sarcasme; de douches waren heel relaxed!) en 's avonds met z'n allen de campingkroeg onveilig gemaakt. Nouja, niet echt. Het was een typische campingkroeg met foute muziek en gemiddelde leeftijd van 14 jaar. Ze hadden wel Heineken bier, dat dan weer wel! Rond een uur of 1 ging de kroeg dicht en gingen we maar naar onze kamers.
This morning we woke up early, so we could see some more of Florence today. I was actually too warm (!) to walk around a lot, so we bought some wine and food at the supermarket and chilled out on stairs near the river in the shade. We had a great view from there, so we really enjoyed our picnic. We must have spent hours there, but it was great! Then we walked around the city a bit and bought some food for in the train to Venice. The train to Venice was quite OK and we arrived at Venezia Mestre around 9 o'clock. From there, it was only 20 minutes by bus to our camping, but somehow we had to wait for 1,5 hours for 'our' bus to the camping. When we arrived at the camping, Saara suddenly remembered that she had already been at this camping once with her parents a couple of years before. That was quite funny, coincidence =D First, we took a long and very nice shower at the public showers (no sarcasm; it was really good!) and spent our night at the local camping bar, which was exactly how a camping bar should be: bad music, average age of 14 years and crowded. They did serve Heineken beer, which totally made up for all the other things :) Around 1 o'clock, the bar closed and we went to our cabins.

 

 

10.04.09 Venetie daar zijn we dan! / Venice here we come!
We moesten voor 10 uur ons hutje uit, dus waren Laura en ik tot de conclusie gekomen dat als we dan toch al vroeg moesten op staan, we net zo goed NOG vroeger konden opstaan en koffie konden drinken op de camping. Best goed idee :) Dus toen de rest aankwam bij de receptie en we de boot moesten halen, hadden wij al gezellig ontbeten en koffie gedronken! Toen we aankwamen in Venetie, gingen we alsnog voor meer koffie want de anderen wilden ook haha :) We hadden al onze tassen bij ons, dus gingen we eerst naar het treinstation om daar onze tassen in de kluis te stoppen. Dat loopt toch een stuk fijner! Vanaf het station hebben we heel veel gelopen, langs Piazza St Marco en de winkelstraatjes. Af en toe gestopt om wat foto's te maken van gondels of om T-Shirts met "I Love Venezia" te bekijken. 's Middags vijf pizza margharita's besteld (onder het motto "Wat is het goedkoopste? Oh, doe er maar 5") en verder gewandeld. Nadat onze voeten uitgewandeld waren en we weer bij ons aankomstpunt waren in de haven van Venetie, besloten we eten te kopen en een picknick te houden in Venetie. Als Venetie er ooit niet meer is, kunnen we toch mooi zeggen dat wij hebben gepicknickt in Venetie. En daarvan waren meer varianten: wijn gedronken hebben in Venetie, ijs gegeten hebben in Venetie, etc. Dus hadden we een mooie trap uitgezocht over een van de grachtjes van Venetie waar we een gezellige picknick hielden. Toen naar het station gelopen en daar nog wat gekaart op de trap voor het treinstation. Om 11 uur hadden we de nachttrein terug naar Dornbirn, waar we na heel wat erg onconfortabele uurtjes in een kapotte slaapstoel rond half 8 's ochtends aankwamen.
We had to leave our cabins before 10:00, so Laura and I figured that if we had to get up early anyway, we might as well get up even earlier so we could have some coffee before we left the camping. So when we met up with the other girls (they were in a different cabin) at the information desk to check out, we already had some breakfast in the camping bar (multi purpose) and drank our morning coffee. After checking out, we went on the boat to Venice and when we got there, the others also wanted to drink some coffee. Haha great idea. We still carried our bags, so we decided we should go to the train station first to drop off our bags in the lockers. From there, we walked a long long distance through the city: Piazza St Marco, the shopping streets.. sometimes we stopped to make some pictures of gondelas or to browse through a pile of "I Love Venice" T-Shirts. In the afternoon, we ate some pizza margharita at a very cute little square in the sun. "What's the cheapest on the menu? Alright, we'll take 5." We were still budget travelling. Then we walked on. Finally, our tired feet took us to the harbour where we arrived in the morning. There was a supermarket, so we bought some food and drinks to have a picnic for dinner. 'When Venice will be flooded one day, we can say we had a picnic in Venice.' And many more like that: we also had wine in Venice, ate pizza in Venice, ate ice-cream in Venice, etc. Anyway, we found some nice stairs to have our picnic. Great :) From there, I was the map reader and I had to guide the group to the train station. That went better than expected and we actually arrived at the train station way too early, so we played some cards on the stairs in front of the station. We took the train at 23:00 from Venezia St Lucia to arrive in Dornbirn at 7:30 after a lot of hours in a very uncomfortable broken chair.

 

11.04.09 Heel veel slapen / A lot of sleep
We kwamen vanochtend dus om half 8 aan op het station van Dornbirn. Heel grappig om weer 'thuis' te zijn, maar eigenlijk waren we allemaal te moe om er iets van te maken. 3 seconden nadat de deur naar m'n kamer open ging, lag ik in bed en viel ik in slaap. Rond een uur of 2 werd ik wakker en had ik even met Petra geskypt. Ik was nog steeds best kapot en heb de rest van de dag niet veel gedaan. Even wat eten gehaald bij de supermarkt en 's avonds gekookt voor de hele groep. Italie afterparty. Iedereen had intussen z'n foto's geupload op Facebook en andere websites, dus iedereen was druk met het analyseren van de foto's en lachen om gezichten van mensen op foto's. 's Avonds wilden we nog film gaan kijken, maar dat trok ik niet echt meer.
So this morning we arrived at 07:30 at the Dornbirn train station. Very funny to be back 'home', but we couldn't really say anything useful about it. We were too tired. About 3 seconds after I opened the door to my room, I lay in bed and fell asleep. Then I woke up around 2 o'clock and did some Skyping with Petra. I was still very tired, so I didn't do anything special today. I went to the supermarket to get some food. In the evening, I cooked for the whole Italy group in the common kitchen as an Italy afterparty. We all had uploaded our pictures by that time, so we were busy analyzing them and laughing at people's faces in pictures. At night, we wanted to watch a movie, but I was too tired.

 

12.04.09 Wandelen naar Conrad Sohm / Walking to Conrad Sohm
Vanochtend eerst even met mama gebeld, want het was vandaag natuurlijk Pasen. Toen ik belde, waren mama en Anne-Marie net aan het Paasontbijt, dus dat was wel gezellig! 's Middags gingen Saara, Laura, Zaida, Teresa en ik een stukje wandelen. Het was alweer zulk mooi weer en we wilden niet nog een dag binnen zitten, dus besloten we uit te zoeken hoe we konden lopen naar de Conrad Sohm (bar buiten de stad). Na een wandeling van zo'n 45 minuten langs het water en door de natuur waren we daadwerkelijk aangekomen bij de Conrad Sohm -buiten mijn verwachtingen om- en hebben we daar even gepauzeerd. Daarna teruggelopen en wat gegeten bij Happy Kebap, de enige plaats in Dornbirn die open was en eten serveerde. Toen realizeerden we ons dat we misschien wat eten moesten kopen voor vanavond en dus liepen we naar de andere kant van Dornbirn om naar de enige supermarkt te gaan die (gedeeltelijk) open was. Super! Ik had gister al boodschappen gedaan, dus ik kocht alleen een ijsje :) Daarna thuis gehangen en 's avonds met Noelia, haar vriendje uit Spanje en groep anderen Forrest Gump gekeken in de kelder. Na de film gingen Teresa en de Mexicaanse meisjes nog casedillas maken, dus at ik nog een hapje mee. Rond 1 uur was ik toch wel vrij moe en ging ik maar slapen. M'n biologische ritme is echt van slag van al die treinreizen van de afgelopen week!
This morning, I first called my mum because of Easter. When I called, my mum and sister were just having their Easter breakfast, so I had great timing :) In the afternoon Saara, Laura, Zaida, Teresa and I went for a walk. It was great weather, so we decided to try to find the way to the Conrad Sohm. We walked for about 45 minutes next to the river and through the nature and then it was there! Against all odds, we had found the Conrad Sohm by foot! Yaay. So we paused there for a little while and walked back to the city, where we found out that Happy Kebap was actually opened during Easter. No other restaurants were open, so yeah.. why not =D Then the rest of the group found out it was actually sunday and tomorrow it would still be Easter and they didn't do any grocery shopping. So we walked to the other side of Dornbirn to go to the only supermarket that was actually partially opened today and did some shopping. After that, I chilled out in my room a bit and later on watched Forrest Gump in the basement with Noelia, her boyfriend and a lot of other people. After the movie, around 23:30, the Mexican girls decided to make some casedillas and I could also have some. Great stuff! Around 1 o'clock I got a bit tired, so I went to bed. My biological rhythm is a bit off now because of all the traveling in the last week!
