16.02.09 De Reis Deel 1 / The Trip Part 1
Na wat kleine opstartproblemen -letterlijk, de auto stopte er vlak voor vertrek bijna mee en de tomtom blies zijn laatste levensadem uit- konden m'n moeder, m'n zus en ik eindelijk beginnen aan de reis! Rond een uur of 8 vertrokken we vanuit Amsterdam. Alles bij me voor zo'n 5 maanden Oostenrijk (winter, wintersport, zomer) en van alles om m'n toekomstige kamer gezellig te maken. Met wat passen en meten door mijn lieve vriendinnetje paste alles zowaar in de auto en konden we weg! Heel spannend. Door het superslechte weer dat vrijwel direct over de grens naar Duitsland de kop op stak (+ dat we niet hard durfden te rijden tussen alle Duitse race-auto's), was onze redelijke ruime planning niet eens zo heel ruim meer en kwamen we rond 12 uur aan bij ons hotelletje in Keulen. Best prima allemaal! Snel slapen, want morgen wordt een lange dag..
After some minor problems (the car nearly died right before we left and our navigation system crashed), my mum, sister and I could finally start our journey! We left Amsterdam around eight o'clock. Everything I needed for my five months in Austria (winter, snowboarding, summer) was somehow packed into the car, which was slighty scary when I drove onto a pretty steep hill and thought that we might not make it over the hill =D. Right after we passed the border with Germany, it started to rain really heavily. And of course: it's the German way of driving! Pretty scary (well not really scary of course, but a bit uncomfortable around those racing cars), but we managed to arrive at the hotel around midnight. Already in Cologne, but still about 600 km to go! Quickly into our beds, because tomorrow will be a long day!
17.02.09 De Reis Deel 2 / The Trip Part 2
Whooa. Vanochtend vroeg opgestaan (rond 7 uur) en snel gedoucht. in de ontbijtzaal beneden hebben we nog even snel een lekker ontbijtje weggetikt en wat koffie gedronken en toen maar weer in de auto. Vol goede moed vertrokken we uit Keulen en al snel had Anne-Marie -m'n zus- de goede weg gevonden richting Oostenrijk. De wegen veranderen al een beetje: meer heuvels! Heuveltje op: iets minder, heuveltje af: heel tof (en Ammie liet even zien hoe je de 150 aantikt met onze overladen auto). 's Middags rond een uur of 1 maar even snel een pasta'tje gegeten om de honger te stillen. Nog zo'n 2 uur rijden en dan zijn we er. Tenminste, als je niet 30 km voor Dornbirn vast komt te staan door overmatige sneeuwval en zelfs de sneeuwkenners niet meer weten wat ze ermee aan moeten! Hilariteit alom, want na zo'n 3 uur in de file en een vooruitzicht met politie die warme dranken en dekens gaat uitdelen moet iedereen natuurlijk naar de wc. Plassen zonder gezien te worden (en nog steeds de sneeuw enigszins te ontwijken) wordt een heuse sport. Gelukkig was de auto volgepakt met spullen en hadden we het niet koud! Een paar keer bellen naar de Fachhochschule om door te geven dat ik er niet om 3 uur ga zijn, maar hoe laat precies.... dat wist nog niemand. Uiteindelijk rond een uur of 9 aangekomen bij de Dormitory en een rondleiding gehad van Sabine, de -erg aardige- internationale begeleidster van de school. Er is een hang-out in het huis met banken, tv en tafelvoetbal en er is zelfs een tuin :) Ook een keuken om met z'n allen te eten, dat is wel gezellig! Toen was het moment daar: de sleutel van m'n kamer. Hij is echt enorm! Ik denk dat 'ie rond de 30m2 is, met eigen badkamer met luxe douchekabine en eigen keuken. Geen idee hoe ik 'm moet vullen (zelfs met al m'n spullen!), maar het is echt heel relaxed! Even wat gaan eten bij de plaatselijke Griek, snel de auto leeggehaald en gaan slapen :) Morgen maar de stad verkennen.
Whoooa. Woke up pretty early this morning (around 7 a.m.) and ran into the shower for a second. Then we went downstairs to the breakfast area to grab a quick toast and some coffee. With great motivation, we went into the car and drove onto the highway again. The roads start changing already: more hills! Up the hill: not so much fun, down the hill: FUN! My sister Anne-Marie showed us a couple of times how to hit the 150 km/h with a fully-packed car. We had a little pasta for lunch around 1 and then drove off to Austria again to arrive around 3 p.m. At least, if there hadn't been a traffic jam because of heavy snowfall. The road was blocked by snow and ice and the snowscraping-machines had difficulties to clear the road. That sucks! On the radio we could hear the newsflashes: 2 hours at the beginning, 4 hours it became. So there we were, in the snow for four hours. Of course, at some point everyone has to go to the toilet, but since we were stuck in the middle of nowhere and there was no comfortable toilet at a reasonable distance, peeing outside and don't get seen by any truckdrivers became a real sport. In the meantime, I had to let the Uni know I wasn't going to arrive there yet, without any new estimated time of arrival.. Finally the roads were cleared (only snow, the ice was still there) we were -as my mum said- luckily slipping over the ice in the right direction. We finally arrived at the student Dorm around 9, to be welcomed by a really kind woman from the Uni. She showed us around in the dorm (there's a hang-out with couches, football-table, tv and a big kitchen where we can all eat together and a garden!) and then showed me my room: it's huuuuuge. I think it's about 30 m2 with a super nice bathroom and shower-unit and my own little kitchen. Even with all my stuff from the car, I'm still not going to fill this room up! Then we went to the local Greek restaurant to have diner to reward my mum's efforts with driving the car :) Afterwards, we quickly emptied the car and went to bed. My new bed :) Tomorrow we will explore the city of Dornbirn.
18.02.09 Laat het feest maar beginnen! / Let the party begin!
Heerlijk geslapen in m'n nieuwe bedje. Mama en Ammie hadden samen het aerobed en hadden daar ook erg lekker op geslapen. Na wat wrijven in onze ogen, keken we naar buiten door m'n raam en zagen alleen maar sneeuw. Ik kan zelfs op de bergen uitkijken vanuit m'n kamer. De zon scheen en alles schitterde: niks van het plan om de stad te verkennen; we gaan de sneeuw in! Even gevraagd aan mijn huisgenootje Travis waar dat het dichtstbij kan. En hup, snowboard onder de arm en richting het station om de bus naar Bögele te pakken. Daar aangekomen is iedereen nog steeds supervriendelijk en leggen ze ons even uit hoe alles werkt met de skipassen enz. Een stukje lopen en daar was ie: onze eerste piste. Mijn zus en ik gingen al snel goed en gingen dus wat andere kleine pistes af. Ookal was het mijn eerste 'echte sneeuw' ervaring ging het super en besloten mijn zus en ik de zogeheten makkelijke blauwe piste af te gaan. Boven aangekomen met stoeltjeslift (hele uitdaging met snowboard) deelden we het eerste stuk met een zwarte piste en was het dus DOODENG. Wel mooi uitzicht op de andere bergen en we konden zelfs zien dat we boven de wolken waren. Het was dan ook wel zo'n 1380 meter hoge berg =D Even een korte samenvatting: tiefschnee en ik gaan niet goed samen. Vooral niet als ik vooruit val, head-first in de sneeuw en nergens kan afzetten omdat ik tot m'n schouders aan afzak in de sneeuw. Ondertussen vliegen de 3-jarige peuters op ski's je aan de lopende band voorbij en liepen de frustraties hoog op. Gelukkig kwam een Nederlandse mevrouw me overtuigen dat het voorbij deze bocht toch echt echt echt beter werd en dat ik mijn plan om de rest te gaan lopen met het board onder m'n arm toch beter kon omgooien. Dramatische afdaling met een vrij goed einde toen de hobbels en bobbels en tiefschnee minder werden om de hoek :) Heerlijk om de weer in de bus te stappen en thuis te gaan koken. Skype uitgeprobeerd en oma gezellig gebeld: werkt super. Wie ik nog niet op Skype heb: noortje.smink =D Morgen weer een dag!
I've slept heavenly in my new bed. Mum and Anne-Marie shared the aerobed together and slept nice as well :) We gave ourselves a couple of minutes to wake up and looked outside through the window. Everything we saw was covered in snow! I can even see the mountains from out my window. The sun was shining and everything was glittering, so we decided not to go into town to do some exploring and go snowboarding instead! I asked my new housemate Travis (who I think is like a half-pro snowboarder) where the closest snowarea was. And off we went to the slopes! When we arrived in Bögele, we went to the skirental for my sis. Everyone here is really really friendly, so they explained us how to get to the slopes and how the skipass-systems work etc. We followed the directions and there it was: our first slope in Austria (and my very first 'real snow' adventure!). Even though I had only done some snowboarding indoors, it all went great and we moved on to a little part of one of the blue paths. After this one, my sister and I still felt really confident and went up with the chair-elevators to the blue path. The elevator itself was already fun, but when we turned around and looked at the way down: SCARY. We shared the first part of the run with the black path, which is the most difficult. I had to go left, they had to go right. Still: If I didn't managed to make the turn, I would end up at the black one haha! The sight was beautiful by the way: We were at 1380 metres high and we were above the clouds. And now a quick summary of my down-hill adventure.. Of course the path was way too difficult and because of the heavy snowfall of yesterday, there were all kind of bumps and I couldn't go down without falling at least 5 times. Then I fell forward in the deep snow and couldn't get up anymore. My board (and bindings) were covered in snow and I couldn't release them. And in the meantime, kids of around 3 years old passed me while doing jumps and turns etc. Whenever I looked down, I felt like this was never going to end and decided I'd rather walk down with my board. Then we met a friendly Dutch woman, who's husband just crashed next to us. She convinced me not to walk and that it was better to go down by snowboard instead, because the hills were much better after the upcoming turn. With shaky legs, I went down and she was right :) After that, things went so much better and my sister and I could finally go down. Anyway, it was great being in the bus to Dornbirn again :) Oh, and I tried Skype and called my grandma and Petra! Works great =D If I haven't added you on Skype yet, my name is noortje.smink!
19.02.09 Snowboarden Poging 2 / Snowboarding Attempt no. 2
Vandaag was het alweer zulk mooi weer hier (misschien altijd?), dus konden we de verleiding niet weerstaan om toch weer te gaan snowboarden. Eerst even naar de plaatselijke Kika (soort kruising tussen Ikea en Piet Klercx enz) gegaan om m'n kamer te vullen met gezelligheid en daarna uitgepakt en ingericht. Het ziet er al een stuk levenderig uit nu! Heb een kleurig kleedje, een grote lamp, een tafellampje, 2 stoelen en wat glazen gekocht :) Daarna even thuis geluncht en in de bus gestapt richting Bögele. M'n moeder ging vandaag wandelen door de sneeuw en m'n zus en ik gingen nog even van de kleinere hellingen af. Door mijn bij nader inzien niet eens zo dramatische afdaling van gister was ik stiekem toch wel weer een beetje onzeker op m'n board, dus bleef ik lekker op het veilige stukje =D M'n zus nam ondertussen een stuk van de blauwe piste en kwam perongeluk onderaan de berg uit en moest daarna een half uur bergopwaarts lopen om ons weer te vinden, oeps! Met mij ging het inmiddels weer prima, dus konden we daarna samen weer het laatste stuk van de blauwe piste pakken om bij mama te komen. Net boodschappen gedaan en straks koken. Heb net in de lift (jaja, luxe!) nog wat huisgenootjes gezien en ook deze waren gezellig, dus tot nu toe alleen maar goed nieuws!
Today was a great day (again!). We could resist the slopes, so we had to go back to Bögele to go snowboarding. First, we went to Kika, which is a Ikea sort of place where I bought some stuff for my room. Afterwards, we went back home to get some lunch and unpack my buyings. We've placed everything and it looks much better now :) Now this was all finished, we were ready to take the bus and go back up the hills! In the bus, we were still amazed with the view. It's really really beautiful up there! Once I was back on my snowboard, I felt a bit scared because of my (when I think back on it now it wasn't even THAT bad, but still) scary down-hill experience of yesterday. I decided to stay in the 'safe area', which is the small slopes, and practiced some more. My mum went for a walk through the forests and my sister followed the blue path for a little way and accidentally ended up at the foot of the mountain, so she had to walk back up for about 30 minutes. Whoops :) In the meantime, I felt much more confident on my board, so we went back down together to meet up with mum. We just did some grocery-shopping, so we'll be ready to make some dinner soon! I've also met some of the other people in the elevator that live here and they seem really nice. Only good news so far!
20.02.09 De stad ontdekken / Exploring the city
Vandaag is het weer net even iets minder dan de vorige dagen, dus hebben we besloten om vandaag onze ontdekkingstocht door de stad te doen. Eerst gingen we even kijken bij de Fachhochschule, zodat ik dat maandag kan vinden :) Mooi gebouw!! En je kijkt overal ongeveer uit op de bergen. Daarna hebben we een rondje gelopen in het stadscentrum en wat winkeltjes bekeken. Ze hebben hier best veel dezelfde winkels als in Amsterdam! 's Middags even geluncht in een leuk cafetje waar ze briljante tekeningen maken in het schuim van je cappuccino/witte chocolade mochacino en waar ik zowaar in het Duits een complimentje over maakte. Mijn eerste zelf-geinitieerde gesprek ;) Het centrum was verder niet zo super-interessant, dus gingen we even naar het VVV om te checken of er niet toevallig een of ander evenement was vanavond. Dat was er niet, maar er was wel een poolcafe. Nou is dat bij ons een beetje traditie op 'vakantie', dus dat werd het plan. Nou hebben we het poolcafe nooit echt gevonden, maar we reden wel door een supermooi natuurgebied-achtig deel van Dornbirn, langs een bevroren rivier. Dat was opzich genoeg voldoening voor ons :) Toen gingen we nog even naar het supergrote winkelcentrum hier in de stad (ben de naam even kwijt, maar dat komt nog wel een keer). Daar hadden ze zelfs een H&M en gelijksoortige ketens, dus voor m'n zomercollectie kan ik flink shoppen. Nouja of niet, want ik heb m'n kast hier zelfs al vol liggen =D Na het shoppen zijn we even thuis gaan chillen en daarna zijn we gaan eten bij Das Rotes Haus, een gebouw uit 1673 helemaal in oude stijl met balken enz. Echt tof! We hebben ook heerlijk gegeten trouwens: ik had een Zwiebelrostbraten (biefstuk met geroosterde uitjes en rode-wijnsaus =D). Daarna nog met z'n 3en creme brulee gegeten met vruchtjes. Super lekker allemaal! Na het eten naar huis gelopen, nog even thuis gekletst en gaan slapen.
Today, the weather isn't as good as it was on the previous days, so we decided to do some exploring in the city today! First, we went to the University, so that I know where to go on Monday ;) Then we walked a bit around the city center and checked out some shops. There are a lot of familiar shops here. We had some lunch in a nice little cafe, where they make brilliant drawings out of the milk topping of cappuccino's and white chocolate mochacino's. Great stuff! And I made a comment on them in German, so that officially was my first self-initiated conversion here =D Then we went to the tourist center to find out if there were any events tonight that we didn't want to miss. There wasn't much to do (except for Carnival), so we drove off to the local pool cafe. We couldn't really find the cafe, but the trip to go there was an event itself: WOW. It was like a national park-ish area covered in snow, with a frozen river next to it. After our trip, we went to the local shopping mall, which turned out to be huge. They even have a MediaMarkt and a H&M here, so I'll be okay whenever I need (even more..?) clothes :) After shopping we chilled out for a bit and went to Das Rotes haus: a restaurant in a building that was founded in 1673. The restaurant was really decorated in a 1673-style, which was cool. And they had great food: I had the best steak in probably years and we had the best creme brulee for desert. Then we had some drinks and went home.
21.02.09 Laatste dag met mama en Anne-Marie / Last day with my mum and Anne-Marie
Aangezien het vandaag de laatste dag is met m'n moeder en Ammie hier, moesten we daar optimaal van profiteren. Dat betekent: om 7 uur op, douchen, snel ontbijten en naar de piste rennen! Het was erg mistig vandaag, dus we twijfelden of we wel de berg op mochten. Oostenrijkers zijn blijkbaar niet zo bang voor mist en geen zicht, want zoals het mannetje van de skiverhuur zei: "You can't see anything.. so?" Kortom: ik ging nog lekker van de onderste baantjes af en m'n zus ging ondertussen de berg op om het maximale eruit te halen. We hadden maar 2 uurtjes ofzo, dus geen tijd voor pauze! :) Daarna weer terug naar huis (het uitzicht vanuit de bus is mooooi!) om de tassen in te pakken en nog even een flinke hamburger te maken, zodat mama en ammie er nog even tegenaan konden in de auto. En toen waren ze weg! Best raar om helemaal alleen te zijn hier :) Het plan was om in een keer door te rijden, maar ik weet nog niet of dat gelukt is! Net even de gezamenlijke keuken ingelopen met thee en koekjes om met wat meer huisgenoten kennis te maken. Was wel leuk :) En ik kreeg net een berichtje van een ander huisgenootje dat we vanavond het Carnavalsgefeest in gaan met z'n allen. Daar horen jullie morgen meer van!
Since it was the last day with my mum and sister, we had to make the most out of it. That means getting up at 7 a.m., having a quick breakfast and running for the hills! We were a bit afraid that our snowboard/ski-plan wasn't going to go through because of the heavy fog today, but as our Austrian Ski-rental guy said "So you can't see anything... so?". Austrians aren't too scared of fog appearently =D So we went up, but since we only had about 2 hours, we didn't have any time for breaks etc. After that, we went back home to pack the suitcases. The view from out the bus back home really is beautiful!! I made us a big hamburger, so my mum and sister weren't hungry in the car for at least a couple of hours :) And then they left! Pretty weird to be all by myself now. They were planning to drive the whole way back home in 1 day, but I'm not sure if they'll manage to do that! I just walked into the shared kitchen to offer some tea and cookies to my new housemates (I figures I needed to meet everyone before school starts), which was nice :) And I just got a message from one of the other housemates that we're going to the Carnival tonight alltogether, so that must be cool! I'll tell you all about it tomorrow!
22.02.09 Carnavalsoptocht / Carnival Parade
Gisteravond was superleuk! De hang-out was helemaal vol met mensen die ik echt nog nooit voorbij had zien komen in de gangen haha! Leuke mensen ook :) We hebben wat potjes tafelvoetbal gedaan en gezellig bier gedronken en gekletst. Daarna ging een klein groepje uit en bleef ik met een groep van ongeveer 10 mensen in de hang-out. Ik heb inmiddels een groepje mensen uit Mexico leren kennen, twee meisjes uit Finland en een jongen en meisje uit Duitsland. Vanmiddag om 13:30 hebben we verzameld met z'n allen om naar de Carnavalsoptocht te kijken, die hier in de stad gehouden wordt. Het was best een groot evenement! Er waren zo'n 80 wagens met mensen eromheen in de vreemdste kostuums. Wel gezellig om met z'n allen daarheen te gaan ook! Alleen na een paar uur waren we allemaal zooo koud, dat we toch wel echt liever naar huis gingen dan nog langer rondhangen in de stad. Ik had nog een Kinderpunsch gehad van een van de Duitse meisjes (warm sinaasappel-achtige substantie) om warm te worden, maar dat werd 'm niet helemaal meer. Thuis even opgewarmd aan de vloerverwarming in m'n kamer (LUXE!) en een kopje Pepermunt-thee gedronken. Dat wordt m'n nieuwe ding hier denk ik, superlekkere thee :) Toen kwamen de Mexicaanse mensen nog even warme chocomel maken hier en gingen we met z'n allen film kijken beneden, Hot Rod. Hilarische film =D En ik heb m'n nieuwe etage-genootje leren kennen, Jana, en zij komt ook uit Finland. Volgens mij is dan nu iedereen van mijn etage hier aangekomen, dus dat wordt gezellig :) Vanavond een beetje relaxen, want morgen wordt een lange dag!
Yesterday was so much fun! The hang-out was filled with people I had never met in the hallways before and they were all very cool :) We've played a couple of games on the soccertable and drank some beers. And of course we've talked a lot haha! I've met a group of people from Mexico, two girls from Finland and a guy and a girl from Germany. Cool people! Today, we'll meet up at 13:30 to go to the Carnival Parade in the city center. It's quite a big event down here! There were about 80 cars with people on it, dancing around in the weirdest costumes ever! Pretty fun, also to be there with the whole group :) But after a while (and even after the Kinderpunsch -kind of warmed up orange juice-) we got sooo cold, that we decided to go back to the dorm. Back home, I could finally warm my toes up to the floorheating in my room (which is actually too luxuryous for a student room, but I won't complain =D). Then, the group of Mexicans I met yesterday evening came over for a hot chocolate and we went downstairs to the hang-out to watch a hilarious movie called Hot Rod. And I've met my floormate (or however you call someone that lives on the same floor in the building =D). She's called Jana and she's from Finland. So now everyone from my floor of the building has arrived. That's going to be fun!
